US Postal Service to Pay Tribute to Betty White with a Special Stamp Next Year
Get ready to see the beloved Betty White grace your mail, not just your screens! The US Postal Service has announced a delightful tribute to the iconic television star in the form of her very own stamp, set to be released next year. This exciting news was revealed on Friday as part of the postal service’s upcoming stamp program for 2025, which will celebrate various themes, including nature, history, and cultural icons like White.
Lisa Bobb-Semple, the director of stamp services, stated in a press release that this preview showcases their dedication to offering a diverse range of subjects for collectors and stamp enthusiasts alike. “This year, we are excited to continue some of our popular series and commemorative anniversaries while introducing new designs,” she noted.
Betty White’s stamp arrives nearly three years after her passing in 2021 at the age of 99, just weeks shy of her 100th birthday. She was well-known for her unforgettable roles in classics like The Golden Girls and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, dedicating her life to the entertainment industry. Renowned for her unique comedic style, White leaves behind a remarkable legacy as one of the longest-serving entertainers in history.
“An icon of American television, Betty White shared her humor and kindness with audiences for an impressive seven decades,” the postal service’s release emphasized. White garnered a new generation of fans in her later years, becoming known not only for her acting prowess but also as a passionate advocate for animal rights.
White’s illustrious career spanned radio, television, and film. Notably, she was the first woman to produce a sitcom, taking the helm of the 1950s series Life with Elizabeth. Her prominence soared in the 1970s, especially with her portrayal of Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and as the lovable Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls.
The design of White’s stamp comes from Greg Breeding, an art director for the Postal Service, with the digital illustration crafted by freelance artist Dale Stephanos. This artwork was inspired by a photograph of White taken in 2010 by Kwaku Alston.
Stephanos expressed his enthusiasm on social media, saying, “I’m thrilled to share the news about this stamp! I would send a letter to my 18-year-old self with this stamp and reassure him that everything will turn out okay.”
In addition to celebrating Betty White, the upcoming stamp series will also honor the late singer-songwriter Allen Toussaint as part of the postal service’s Black Heritage collection. More exciting stamps are set to be revealed in the coming weeks, featuring themes like the Appalachian Trail, winter landscapes, and the US flag.
